All our projects, large or small, begin here. We can only really help a client when we truly understand not just the brief but also – who our clients are and what makes them tick. Investing time in this deeper level of understanding from the outset is what provides us with the insight and ability to make recommendations that will deliver measurable and meaningful results for our clients whilst also providing great experiences for their audiences. We’re curious by nature. So it’s only natural that when we start a new project, we ensure that we find out as much as we can about you. We do this using a number of different processes and techniques, some we can perform in house, whilst others are based on client facing workshops, discovery meetings, interviews and more. Once we understand who your audience is, we can start to build individual ‘User Profiles’ that help the whole team – e.g clients, content writers, designers, testers etc. to understand and recognise typical users of the project. Their level of detail will vary, however aspects like age, gender, interests, salary, job role etc can all help us to really understand and step around in the shoes of different users, understanding their motivations, concerns, expectations etc.
It’s got to look good. That’s a given. And yet, we all know looking good is only skin deep. If it looks good but somehow, still feels ‘wrong’ then it won’t engage your users or encourage them to come back. The steps below are methods that we’ve honed over many years to help us explore, discover and collaborate with our clients throughout the process – effectively crafting each project into a unique and engaging digital experience. Each step in our process helps us to focus and hone in more closely on a user’s experience. In the IA we’re essentially establishing orientation and signposting an in wireframing we start to look more closely at the elements that a user will see on the screen itself: content, navigation, calls to action, interactive features etc. Whilst we’re perfectly comfortable developing brands from the outset, we’re often asked to work with already well-established brands. Whilst corporate brand guidelines serve their purpose, it’s rare to find them providing any real insight into how a brand might transition or thrive in the digital realm. We start where many brand guidelines finish – where we explore how a brand might look and feel when experienced in a digital environment – how should logos adapt to smartwatch screens? How should this appear in social feeds? What should audiences expect or feel when they interact with this brand on a smartphone, tablet or TV? We explore all these issues and more in our brand development phase – from technical implementations to the more emotional and visual impacts that a brand can convey online.
If content is the fuel of the web, then code and development is surely the engine that drives it. Whilst content and user interface design provide essential interfaces into the technology that drives digital projects, the code work itself requires its own strategy, planning and build stages that when professionally executed can deliver seamless flow to a user’s experience. Code needs to be thoroughly considered and documented cross platform, as well as forward thinking and where possible future proofed. Ever tried to use a website on a smartphone or tablet that forces you to zoom in and scroll about just so you can read the content? Not a great experience is it? Whilst most websites are built to be ‘responsive’, it’s less common to find sites that have been properly considered from a ‘mobile first’ principal. What we mean by this is that if you consider content and functionality to be important no matter what device a user is on, then it makes sense to work and plan from the lowest common denominator first and plan what a user will need from a mobile device first. What’s the most important pieces of content or functionality they need to see on a small mobile screen? Is it that huge, screen sized banner image that everyone seems to think is so important? Possibly not. We design a site from the ground up to consider how a site may progressively enhance depending on the size of screen a site is being viewed on. The more space we have the more we might be able to show but never at the expense of meaningful information or calls to action.
Launching your site will be just the first step in what should ideally be an ongoing process of improvements and development to your key, public facing communication platform. Whilst you may have resources in house who can support you in some parts of the process, its rare that you’ll have the full gamut of technical, creative, strategic, production and writing skills required to keep your project running at an optimum capacity. Responding to your competitive landscape, keeping your site secure with the latest software patches and upgrades, adapting to new and best practices on the web, maintaining engagement and launching new marketing campaigns or programmes requires many of these skills and that’s where we’ve built a dedicated team to help. You’ll be assigned with a dedicated Digital Account Manager who will be your first point of contact for all your ongoing website support needs. They in turn work with support team on your side, you can depend on talented designers, developers and account handlers who know your project intimately and are committed to building long term relationships with you and your team. Regular (usually weekly) client meetings ensure that projects and tasks stay on track and that we’re on hand to provide ongoing support whilst also recommending appropriate improvements to your site.
